Q. What is going to be the holiday look of the season?
A. There are so many great trends this season. We are seeing a lot of leopard print, but don't wear it all over. Instead spice up an outfit using leopard, like wearing a pair of leopard shoes or a leopard top.
Super feminine touches like lace and ruffles are really big this fall and winter. Depending on your body type you can wear a ruffled skirt or ruffled shirt. If you have wider hips stay away from a full skirt, if you tend toward being top heavy, avoid a ruffled top, which will only add more volume.
Red was all over the runways during Fashion Week. Carolina Herrera had it on the runway. A red dress is perfect for the holidays. I love mixing red with metallics like silver. Avoid red and gold, which can make you look like an ornament.
Another big trend is velvet; and done nicely velvet can look really hot. Be a little big daring and try a velvet skirt or incorporate small touches of velvet in an outfit.
Q. What looks should we avoid?
A. Clothes that are too tight. Pick outfits that have balance because dressing for your body type is really important.
Mixing and matching prints are ok, but make sure the prints you choose are not too bold. When in doubt, go with your girlfriends and get their input.
Q. How can you make an outfit we already have more contemporary?
A. Accessories play a really big part in making an outfit look modern. To make something look more modern try adding a statement necklace, maybe add a belt, or some other funky touch.
Q. What are the trends in accessories this season?
A. One really big trend for holiday parties is necklaces with mixed metals like gold and silver, and that also have a mix of beads, chains and pearls. In bracelets we are seeing bold metal cuffs, or cuffs with big gemstones. Cocktail rings are also always in trend. They add a bit of glamour and don't have to be expensive. If you go to a Forever 21, or a similar store, you can find one for as little as $4. But keep accessories to a maximum of two. Sometimes minimal is better.
