The portrayal of Latino men in the mass media is too often negative or one dimensional. This is why El Diario-La Prensa takes pride each year in gathering and celebrating outstanding Latino men with our “El Awards.”
For six years, the El Awards have paid tribute to men who have distinguished themselves in a range of fields and who are representing for the families and communities that raised them.
The 24 honorees this year have achieved historic milestones for Latinos, work quietly to defend the most vulnerable populations and have confronted the obstacles continuously thrown in the way of our community. Among them are Latinos such as Feniosky Peña-Mora, Dean of Columbia University’s Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science; legendary journalist and talk show host Geraldo Rivera; and Oscar Paredes, head of a grassroots organization that defends day laborers in New York City.
Recognizing that our community must always pave the way for young people to pursue their aspirations, El Diario-La Prensa also awards several college-bound young men with scholarships. We hope that these and other youths continue a tradition of mutual support on which Latino communities have long depended.
With today’s special luncheon tribute, the El Awards will have been presented to 150 Latinos. The collective group is highly impressive—it includes clergy members, community activists, city commissioners, former offenders who have turned their lives around and assumed leadership positions, athletes, judges, entrepreneurs, history makers, documentarians, actors, journalists, academics, and musicians.
These remarkable men are sons, fathers, brothers, husbands and partners. But most of all, they serve as lasting inspiration to Latino boys striving to become the torchbearers that our families, community and future generations need and deserve.
Look for a special supplement this Sunday honoring these destacados.
