Proposition 2, which establishes improved standards and more space for farm animals like hens, pigs, and calves in agricultural production, may seem frivolous given today’s many problems. But neither cruelty against animals nor health risks in our food chain should be taken lightly. Vote yes on this measure!

The initiative basically proposes more space for these animals to move, especially hens for industrial egg production. There are currently 19 million hens packed five to seven per cage, practically immobile in an individual space of only 67 square inches. This situation, on top of being inhumane, lends itself to the development of salmonella and other diseases.

We believe that legislation is the best way to change agricultural regulation, but the industry has successfully blocked bills like AB594 sponsored by Assembly member Mervyn Dymally. The same industry opposes this measure, arguing that the new requirement will increase the cost of eggs. On this issue the industry lacks credibility, since it is currently under federal investigation for manipulating the market to increase egg prices. While it is true that the measure includes an additional one-time cost, the industry has until 2015 to pay for it.

Other states such as Arizona, Colorado, Florida, and Oregon have passed similar measures relating to calves and sows without negative repercussions. California is taking another step forward by including egg-laying hens in this category, and the impact will not be worse.

The initiative also has the support of numerous organizations including the California Veterinary Medical Association and the Center for Food Safety. Support Proposition 2!
