Assembly District 68 - John Ruiz
East Harlem, El Barrio, has suffered too long through leaders putting less than their best foot forward. We endorse John Ruiz as the candidate who will put the needs of the residents of District 68 first.
Ruiz knows how to fight. He comes out a long career with the NYC Fire Department, where he faced racism as one of a handful of Latino firefighters. He also founded a fire education program that took root in schools.
Throughout his life, Ruiz has been a man on the ground, actively demonstrating his commitment to keeping kids off the streets and families safe. Now, he is a serious candidate, one who is well in tune with a community besieged by reckless landlords.
Ruiz’s agenda includes promoting the preservation of affordable housing and the creation of an East Harlem Cultural Arts Center that would draw tourism to a neighborhood that has yet to fully leverage its cultural and creative talent. To drive this community agenda forward, Ruiz understands the need for partnership among East Harlem’s elected representatives.
In Albany, East Harlem needs an aggressive champion. Vote for Ruiz on Sept. 14
Guillermo Linares for Assembly District 72
As in El Barrio, tenants and small businesses owners in Washington Heights are among those who are squeezed by gentrification. A leader who knows how to tap into the organizing power of a community is clearly in order.
Guillermo Linares readily fits the bill. His cumulative experience—first as an education activist, then as the first Dominican City Councilman and more recently as the city’s immigrant affairs commissioner—lends itself to maintaining and securing representation for the city’s largest immigrant group.
