The constituents of Queens Senate District 13 deserve a proven leader who can represent them well, one who can restore respectability and credibility to an office tarnished by misconduct. That leader is José Peralta.

In the upcoming special election for District 13, EL DIARIO/LA PRENSA fully endorses Peralta for New York State Senate. He brings a long record of service and accomplishments that began before his nearly eight years of work as an assemblyman for communities that have some of the highest immigrant concentrations in New York City, and the nation. He understands these communities beyond an official capacity as he is a son of Corona, Queens.

Aside from the political know-how Peralta has accumulated, he has demonstrated a sincere commitment to his constituents and the greater Latino community. In the past, Peralta successfully requested the dedication of Operation Impact resources from the NYPD for his district. Through state legislation, the assemblyman recently led an effort to expand the number of bank branches opening in underserved areas. After an off-duty police officer fatally shot an unarmed Latino father and then disappeared from the scene, Peralta co-sponsored legislation that would require officers to immediately report discharging their weapon.

Assemblyman Peralta secured $125,000 in funding for Make the Road New York, a community organization that is a force for immigrant workers. He has also secured more than $1.5 million in capital funds to renovate subway stations on the No. 7 train line.

We understand that some questions have been raised about Peralta’s handling of campaign office space in the past. But he is not charged or convicted of any egregious behavior.
