This gross display is not limited to sidewalks. The pile up of garbage in the train tracks is also disgusting and New Yorkers can’t blame anyone but themselves for it. With all of this filth, it’s no wonder that litter is one of the first unpleasant things visitors notice about the city.
Dirt and litter are not only embarrassing nuisances– they actually have adverse effects on the environment.
The garbage people discard into the street can drift into ponds and rivers, pollute water and harm fish and other wildlife. According to the Web site Green-CT.org, cigarette butts, another thing people like to drop into the street, are composed of cellulose acetate, a type of plastic that can last for more than 10 years in the environment.
Recently, the city announced that fines up to $250 would be issued to anyone leaving dog poop in the street. In train stations, the MTA displays signs that ask straphangers to properly dispose of papers.
But New York is due for a citywide anti-litter campaign. New Yorkers need to be reminded that everyone is responsible for keeping our city clean.
Parents should also demonstrate good examples of garbage disposal to their kids while schools can also play an active part in teaching children about the environmental effects of litter.
